Application and technology

Most of my experience surrounds individual work with patients and shadowing therapists; however, I have had the opportunity to explore different treatments myself. On Thursday last week, I was allowed to try Graston for the first time. Graston is a collection of tools used for deep tissue massages. Graston helps to apply more pressure to different parts of the muscle because each tool is shaped differently to get to every area. During my Graston, I noticed that my left shoulder got very red, which showed that I had a lot of injured tissue in that area. Most patients love this technique because they can feel the difference in their muscles immediately, but I was not too fond of this technique. The rest of the day, my shoulder was a little sore. It is also bruised, which is a common side effect. This week started fast. On Monday, I helped create a mobility routine for one of the patients recovering from a stroke. I instituted a balance exercise that consisted of supported ankle rocking. On Tuesday, I was able to try out the electronic stimulation devices. The first device was primarily to help with the pain. The device was placed on my right shoulder. It sent shock waves into my arm that felt unnatural. The second device helps to fire the muscles. I used this device on both my right forearm and bicep. I was surprised by the power that this device had. When the device stimulated my bicep flection, my entire arm bent. And when the device to stimulated my forearm, my whole hand closed. My experience trying out these different devices and protocols has been enjoyable because I can dive into the process and demonstrate my learning. I hope to learn new methods to help patients in the coming weeks.

  1. As you are learning, there are lots of treatment methods out there. I have always found it amazing that the good trainers and rehab professionals, seem to know exactly which one will be best for each patients specific needs. Keep gathering as much knowledge as you can, Dom.
